I'm currently using Windows 11 and trying to shrink a partition on a large HDD that's not my C drive. My goal is to free up space for a different operating system. However, I'm encountering issues with unmovable files that prevent me from shrinking this partition. The drive has around 16TB total capacity, and even with only 3TB of data on it, I can't shrink it beyond a third of the total capacity. I've already run the 'Defrag and Optimize Drives' tool and have restarted my system. I've even checked the event viewer, which indicates that the last unmovable file is related to the Master File Table (MFT). I'm unsure how to interpret this info or if I can move or delete these files without risking data loss. Any advice on how to locate and handle these unmovable files effectively would be greatly appreciated!

Another option is to boot from a USB drive and use a third-party tool to handle the partition resizing. I recommend GParted; it's a powerful tool specifically for tasks like this. Just make sure to follow the instructions carefully and back everything up beforehand.
If you're running into issues shrinking your partition because of unmovable files, one solid approach is to back up all your data. After that, you can delete the existing NTFS partition via Disk Management, then create a new smaller partition. Once that's done, you can restore your files to the new volume. It's a bit tedious, but that's often the only way to get around the limitations imposed by the MFT and other system files on your existing partition.
When dealing with large drives, the MFT zone often expands over time, which can block resizing. Unfortunately, if you need a significant reduction in size, moving everything off the drive and deleting and recreating the partition may be necessary. It's a hassle but usually the most effective solution.
If you're looking to install Linux without dual booting, consider using the Windows Store to add a Linux distribution like Ubuntu. This won't help with your partition issue directly, but may offer alternatives for utilizing that space effectively in the future.
