How can I focus on video courses instead of getting overwhelmed by the urge to learn everything at once?

Hi everyone! I'm hoping to find some advice on staying focused while learning through video courses. I work as a Jack of All Trades in a small company, mainly focusing on Windows Server and Active Directory. I've come a long way from knowing almost nothing three years ago, but I'm at a point where I need to further my knowledge beyond just 'learning by doing.'

I often try to start video courses, but I struggle to finish them. After just an hour into a lengthy 26-hour course, I find myself distracted, thinking about other subjects like DNS or wondering if I should learn something else first, which just demotivates me even more. I never had good study habits growing up, and now that I'm in my late 20s, I'm finding it challenging to keep pace with these courses.

How do you all manage to sit through long video courses and retain what you learn? Is there a roadmap I could follow for Windows Server and Active Directory that might help streamline my learning? Thanks for your insights!

I've been in a similar situation where I felt overwhelmed by everything I wanted to learn. A couple of things that helped me were: 1. Reminding myself that researching other topics feels productive but isn't the same as actually studying. 2. Using an app to track my study time. It gamifies the process and keeps me focused, especially when I pause to do extra research on topics I find challenging. It slows things down a bit but helps me stay engaged.

I totally relate to your struggle! Breaking up long courses into shorter segments of 20–30 minutes can work wonders. Aim for small, practical achievements instead of trying to tackle the whole course at once. Remember, you don't need to master every concept before moving forward; just focus on making consistent progress.

Consider creating a project at work that aligns with what you want to learn. Sure, video courses are helpful, but applying what you've learned to a real-world problem makes a huge difference. There's always something in the workplace that could use improvement; tap into that!

I totally get where you're coming from! I've jumped from learning Python to game dev and even advanced math for AI—it's wild! It's fun to explore, but I don't necessarily master everything. Just remember, as a sysadmin, you don't need to be an expert in every single tech; the variety helps in troubleshooting and adaptability. Keep enjoying the learning journey!

One approach you might try is to skip long video lectures altogether. I personally find listening to someone talk for an hour doesn't suit my learning style. Instead, focus on one specific topic at a time, dive into the documentation, and get hands-on with real implementations. Build, break, and troubleshoot those setups. It’s way more engaging and you'll learn a lot faster that way!

From personal experience, dealing with ADHD can be a real struggle! I've found a lot of success following the techniques from Jim Kwik’s book, 'Limitless.' It's really helped me with memory retention and seeing things through. Good luck, you're definitely not alone in this!
