How Can I Get WiFi to My Garden Office That’s Just Out of Range?

I've got a garden office about 30 feet from my house, but the WiFi signal from my router doesn't quite reach it. I have a couple of Broadband Extenders that use my electrical wiring to transmit data. One is connected to the router via an Ethernet cable, and the other is in the garden office. What device can I connect to the Ethernet cable in the office to get WiFi working there? Thanks for any tips!

An access point is what you need! You can also repurpose an old router if you have one lying around. Just check online on how to set it up as an access point. For better performance over 30 feet, consider using a wired access point with a focused antenna.

Good idea! I wish I hadn't thrown out those old routers!

Are you in the UK? The electrical setup in your house, like if it's using a ring main or a fused spur, could impact how well your powerline solution works. If they’re on different circuits, you might run into issues. You could also consider placing a wireless repeater in your upstairs bedroom to catch better signal from the router.

Thanks for clarifying that! I wasn't sure about the electrical layout here. I’ll do some digging into it.

I just moved in here, and I’m not sure if the garden office is on a different ring main. Could I still use a repeater, and will the garden office have the same network name as my main router?

I have a similar setup using TP-link powerline extenders. They come with both Ethernet ports and WiFi in the office end. It works really well!

Is it this one? [https://amzn.eu/d/aFS57DE](https://amzn.eu/d/aFS57DE) It looks similar to what I've got.

You should look into getting an access point. You can plug it into the Ethernet cable from your extender in the garden office, and it will create its own WiFi network for you to connect to.

Would something like [this](https://amzn.eu/d/gWUmAa3) work?

Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out.

Just a heads up, using two lossy solutions like powerline extenders can make your signal weaker. You might want to ask an electrician about running a dedicated Ethernet cable from your router to the garden office instead. That would let you connect a proper wifi access point with a strong signal.
