I'm trying to get the best performance out of GTA V on my older laptop. Although I know it's not the latest model, I've made some upgrades and thought the game should run decently at low settings. Here are my specs:
- Intel i7-5500U
- Intel HD 5500 + AMD R7 M360 (the game uses the AMD GPU)
- 16 GB RAM + SSD
Right now, I'm getting around 45-55 FPS on low settings, which I'm grateful for, but the graphics look a bit pixelated and worse than what I've seen in gameplay videos where even lower-end GPUs perform better. Should I be concerned about my game looking this poor despite decent FPS, or is there something off with my system? Any tips would be much appreciated!

Your CPU is likely the bottleneck here. The i7-5500U is outdated and not the best for CPU-intensive games like GTA V. The videos you watched featuring the GT 730 might have been using a much better CPU, leading to higher performance. You might want to look at your CPU’s performance and see if there’s any way to optimize or upgrade it.
It sounds like your expectations could be a bit high for that CPU and GPU combo. Remember, the GT 730 is a desktop card, which typically performs better than mobile GPUs. Also, consider your screen's resolution; lower resolutions can aid performance significantly. The videos you’ve seen may have used lower resolutions, which makes a big difference.
Are you using the Legacy or Enhanced version of the game? If you’re on Enhanced, I recommend switching to Legacy; it’s not as demanding and might help improve your performance. My old laptop with a 960M graphics card runs it smoothly at 60 FPS on high settings! There are numerous optimization guides available online that could also help you boost performance.
