How Can I Improve My Interview Skills in Web Development?

I'm experiencing this frustrating issue where I feel completely at ease when coding, but interviews make me feel like I've forgotten everything I know. During interviews, I can't seem to describe my thought process effectively, even for basic questions. Although I build projects all week with no problem and explain my work to coworkers confidently, in an interview, I seem to overthink and become scattered. I don't struggle with difficult questions; it's the simple ones that trip me up. It's starting to feel like the interview version of myself is misrepresenting the competent developer I am. I need some advice on how to get better at this!

I hear you, interviews can be tough in a way that doesn't reflect our real skills. Think of it like debugging: take your time, center yourself on the main idea, and articulate your thoughts out loud. Try practicing explaining a recent project as if you’re guiding a teammate, not pitching yourself. It makes a huge difference!

It's completely normal to feel that way! Interviews focus on explaining your code rather than just writing it, which can throw off a lot of people. What helped me was treating interviews like part of my regular workflow. Use a consistent outline to follow during your explanations. Plus, having helpful resources like interviewcoder on hand during your interviews can help keep you from overexplaining or forgetting the key steps.

I’ve been through this, too! The more you interview, the better you'll get at it. It feels awkward at first but getting used to common questions really helps. AI tools can also be beneficial—they can simulate interview scenarios. But remember, some employers will appreciate your coding skills without focusing so much on how you interview.

A little trick that helped me is to create a simple script for explaining your thought process. Break it down into clear steps: state your goals, outline a rough plan, then zoom into 1 or 2 steps for more detail, and finally touch on trade-offs. Practice saying this out loud, record yourself, and listen back to improve. It’s all about getting comfortable explaining your process. Slow down during the interview to articulate your thoughts without rushing.

Mock interviews can work wonders! I totally relate to the anxiety. Sometimes, I take a low dose of propranolol before a big meeting to manage my symptoms. It really helps with anxiety and allows me to think more clearly when I'm under pressure.
