How Can I Keep My Kids Safe Online Using Linux?

I'm looking for ways to ensure online safety for my kids who are using Windows 10 (which can't be upgraded to Windows 11). We previously managed their screen time and monitored their usage with a Microsoft family account, but now I want to explore options with Linux. Does anyone have experience with tools or methods to protect children and keep track of their online activities using a Linux system?

I hear kidlogger has a Linux client for Ubuntu-based systems. It might be a good option, but it does feel a bit too commercial for my taste. I’d prefer something more straightforward.

I've been using Bazzite Linux for my son and have some thoughts on this as well. I haven’t had the chance to research extensively, but I’d love any additional recommendations. I'd like to know how best to integrate monitoring software with what I'm currently using.

While tools can help, I believe that open conversations about computer use are essential. It's invasive to install spyware on your child’s device. Instead, keep the computers in shared spaces and regularly discuss their online activities with them. This approach builds trust and encourages responsible behavior.

Cloudflare’s family DNS is a solid choice for blocking NSFW sites, and don’t forget to use tools like uBlock Origin to filter out ads. It adds another layer of protection and can save you from phishing attempts too.

It's all about the browser in this case. You can use Stayfree on Linux, which helps monitor usage. And if you're using GNOME, there are built-in parental controls that you can take advantage of. However, I'd suggest questioning why not block adult sites directly at the router instead of solely relying on controls on the kids’ devices.

One effective method is to set up a DNS that blocks adult content, like Mullvad DNS, and use an application called Timkpr-next to manage screen time. It will automatically lock the user out once their time limit is reached. Also, create user accounts without admin privileges and disable guest accounts for added security. Don't forget to use ad blockers like uBlock Origin or AdNauseam with all filters activated to enhance their browsing experience.
