I've been trying to edit a game save file on Steam, but every time I make even a tiny change—like pressing the spacebar—it totally resets the file when I load the game. I think there must be some sort of verification system that ignores the modified file if it doesn't match the original. Can someone help me figure out a workaround for this? I'm pretty new to this stuff and I'm just using Notepad for editing. If this question belongs in another place, please let me know!

Are you sure you're editing the save file while the game isn't running? Sometimes it checks for changes and resets if something’s off. Just to be safe, make sure the game is completely closed before you edit the file.
If you can share which game it is, that might help! Different games have different methods for handling save files, so it'd be easier to guide you if we know the title.
It really depends on the specific game and what kind of save file you're messing with. This doesn’t quite fit into programming questions, but maybe there's a better forum for game saves where you could ask for help. What game are you trying to edit?
