How Can I Legally Salvage Useful Items from E-Waste Centers?

Hey everyone! I'm new here and looking to save some cash. I've seen videos from Linus and ZTT about salvaging stuff from e-waste centers and dumpsters, and I'm curious if there's a legal way for me to do this too. Does anyone have any tips or personal experiences with this?

Most e-waste places probably won’t even notice you trying to salvage anything. Money can talk though; if they say no, maybe offer to pay a small fee or something. It doesn’t hurt to ask!

So, should I consider paying an admission fee or buying something from them to gain access?

Many recycling facilities don’t allow random people to pick through their stuff. However, if you go during off hours when they’re closed, you might find treasures that people drop off. I once got a couple of decent hard drives that way! Also, networking with IT folks in local businesses can lead to opportunities for snagging older gear before it gets discarded.

Good to know! Just a heads up, there are legal gray areas, so I did get in trouble once for picking something up off the road because it was considered a hazard. Just be cautious!

In my experience, some e-waste centers act like they’re guarding treasure! It helps to have connections or money if you want to access their goods. Often, they only deal with certified recyclers directly.

The best approach is simply to talk to the e-waste recycling center directly. They might have liability concerns about letting people sift through their waste. Try asking if they sell parts on a resale site instead.

You might want to consider getting discards from friends or family. Many people toss out old PCs when they slow down, but they could still be in good shape, especially if you install Linux. You might also find some good stuff left next to dumpsters that the trash collectors ignore. It's hit-or-miss, but sometimes you get lucky!
