How Can I Level Up My Coding Skills and Build a Solid Portfolio?

I'm 28 years old and currently pursuing a degree in computer science after completing a coding bootcamp last year. I have some experience with React, Python, Java, and C++, and I'm working on side projects to strengthen my portfolio. I live in Golden, CO, and I'm eager to learn more and gain confidence in programming. I'd love to hear any suggestions for tools, resources, or learning paths that could help me out. Specifically, I'm interested in building projects that would impress hiring managers, especially since I dream of working for a fitness tech company like Fitbit or Whoop in the future. Starting school again is a bit intimidating, especially since in May I'll only have my associate's degree. All advice is welcome!

Since you're interested in fitness tech, think about projects that merge your coding skills with your passion. You could develop a simple fitness tracker app or even a squat counting tool using machine learning for pose detection. These projects could showcase your skills effectively, allowing you to stand out to hiring managers. Just remember, it’s fine to start small and scale up your ideas if they feel too ambitious at first!

To really elevate your learning, it might be helpful to focus deeply on one specific area before spreading out. This approach builds more substantial knowledge than switching around various languages or frameworks. If you chase many things at once, you risk becoming only a surface-level coder. To build confidence in coding, keep challenging yourself with projects that align with your interests, but make sure they're cohesive to avoid fractured learning. Also, try contributing to open-source projects, which can really boost your confidence when you see your contributions accepted!

That's great advice! Do you have any project ideas that could resonate with what I'm aiming for, especially relating to fitness?
