How can I limit the FPS globally on my Linux Mint system?

I've been playing some older games on my Linux Mint setup, and while it's great that they're running smoothly, I've noticed that they're hitting frame rates well over 200 FPS. The issue is that my monitor only supports 60 FPS, so all those extra frames are unnecessary. Is there a way to set a global FPS limit so that these games won't exceed my monitor's refresh rate?

It's good to know that having FPS over your monitor's refresh rate can actually help with reducing latency, but you usually don't need more than 60 FPS for a 60 Hz monitor. One option you could look into is using tools like MangoHud to limit FPS for individual games, but that's not a global solution. Just check if your game has built-in FPS limiting features first.

For a more global solution, you can try using gamescope. You can run your games with the command `gamescope -r 60 -- ` to keep everything locked at 60 FPS. Just check whether it's available on your version of Mint!

If you're primarily playing older DirectX games, you might want to try DXVK's environment variable setup to cap your FPS. Keep in mind that this won't work for OpenGL or Vulkan games. It's not a universal fix but could be helpful for certain titles.
