How can I locate and delete .dmg files on my Windows computer?

I'm having trouble with my SSD storage. I ran Windirstat, and it shows that .dmg files are taking up a massive 25% (56GB) of my space. The issue is, I can't seem to find these files anywhere. I've looked through my files and even checked the root folder where I expected they would be, but nothing shows up. Since .dmg files are typically associated with Mac, I'm unsure if I should even be worried about them. Did I download something a while back and forget about it? Would it be okay to delete them if I find them? Any suggestions on how to search for and safely remove these files? Thanks for your help!

Running a disk cleanup could help too! Just make sure to select 'clean up system files' and check all the boxes.

Could you clarify what you mean by they don't show up? Have you checked the option to show hidden files and thoroughly searched for them? By the way, have you been downloading Mac apps unintentionally?

You might want to try using the command prompt to hunt down these .dmg files. Open it up and type 'cd c:/' followed by 'dir /a /s *.dmg'. This will let you see all files, even the hidden ones, by searching through all the directories.

That's a solid method! Just a heads-up, it could take a while depending on how many files you have.

You could try using FileTree Pro; there's a demo available that can show you where these files are located.

Don't forget to check your recycle bin and your downloads folder! Also keep an eye out for other user profiles on your PC; sometimes old user accounts can hold onto files that don't show up in a search. You can check this by going to c:users and looking for any unfamiliar profiles.

Consider using WizTree. It's a great tool for finding large files quickly. Also, keep in mind that the folder might be hidden but still accessible. .dmg files are often Mac-related, so you might have downloaded something from iTunes or similar.

Another great option is to use a tool called Everything to search for .dmg files quickly.
