How can I migrate from an old SharePoint setup to a newer version?

I'm currently dealing with an outdated SharePoint 3.0 setup running on Windows Server 2003. With my supervisor gone and the legacy system in place, I'm looking for a supported method to migrate to a more recent version of on-premises SharePoint without having to perform multiple necessary upgrades, like moving to Service Pack 2 first. Ideally, I want to do a fresh deployment of a newer version while keeping our existing files and content intact. Is there a reliable way to transfer just the data without upgrading the legacy system?

Upgrading to a newer on-prem version? Seems a little risky, considering how long the last setup lasted! Just to let you know, the latest SharePoint versions require Windows Server 2019 or newer. You'll probably need to upgrade your hardware before making any moves.

Honestly, if you're still on Windows Server 2003, consider migrating to SharePoint Online instead. It's way more future-proof. Doing this on a legacy system just seems like a recipe for disaster.

Since SharePoint 2003 has a SOAP API, you might be able to leverage that for migration. It could help to pull your files and content without the typical upgrade hassle.

Why not skip the hassle entirely and move to M365? It's easier and much more efficient.

Honestly, your best bet might be to hire a SharePoint consultant. They can guide you through the migration without all the headaches.
