I'm trying to help my dad free up space on his C drive. When I built his PC, I set up a 500GB C drive for Windows and a separate 1.5TB partition for all his programs. Despite that, he still installed a lot of stuff on the C drive. Now, I realize that just moving programs might break them due to registry settings and direct file paths. What's the right way to do this without messing everything up? Also, I can't extend the C drive because the recovery partition is in the way. Any tips?

It sounds like the best move is to uninstall the programs from the C drive and then reinstall them on the 1.5TB partition. While it might feel like a hassle, it's the safest way to ensure everything works afterward. You could also just move over user data like documents and downloads if there are no huge software dependencies. If he's okay with it, consider simplifying things by merging those partitions into one big drive.
If you want a less invasive option, consider resizing the C drive. Just keep in mind that the recovery partition might block you from doing this directly. You can try moving the recovery partition to the end of the disk using partition management software, and then expand the C drive into the freed-up space.
Unfortunately, I can't rearrange the partitions because of the order they were set up in. Otherwise, I would have extended the C drive already.
Something you could do is back up old pictures and documents onto two USB drives, just to clear up unnecessary files. Make dated folders for better organization. Once you get rid of some of those files, it might free up enough space for you to work with.
Honestly, partitioning drives like this isn't very practical anymore. If it’s an option, consider backing everything up to an external drive, then merging those partitions. Then reinstall everything on a single partition. It might take time, but it will save you from future headaches.
That sounds painful! I prefer to avoid reinstalling all 200 programs he has. I might look into deleting the recovery partition, then see if I can just extend the C drive.
Before jumping to reinstall anything, check the downloads folder. Older files or unnecessary downloads can often be cleaned up quickly. If most of the space is taken by the installed applications, then sadly, you'll have to uninstall and reinstall in the correct location. If he's hoarding media files, you could just move those over.
Mostly, it's all about his DAWs and samples. They have to stay organized, so moving them is a bit of a task already.

I get it, but my dad has tons of music production software and extensions. Wouldn't that be super tedious to reinstall all of them?
