Hey everyone! I'm looking for help. My dad has an old CD of Doom 2 that he used to play on a computer that we no longer have. He tried to use the CD on his Windows 7 desktop, which he's about to retire, but he keeps getting an error message and can't launch the game. He's considering getting a new Windows 11 laptop and wants to know if there's any way to play the old Doom 2 on it. He really loves the nostalgia of the original version and isn't interested in the newer ones. I've thought about getting him a USB CD adapter, but I haven't seen any that specifically mention compatibility with games. Any suggestions on converters or solutions that could help him play the game again?

You can actually download it directly from the Internet Archive [here](https://archive.org/download/doom-2-play). It may give you a version that works without the CD!
Keep in mind that 16-bit DOS games won't work on 64-bit Windows 7 or newer. Consider finding the Doom games on Steam; they often sell bundles for pretty cheap and they work seamlessly on newer systems.
You could try using DOSBox! It’s a free program that allows you to run old DOS games on modern systems, but you might need to fiddle with it a bit and do some research to get it set up.
It's possible that the CD is too outdated for modern Windows to read effectively. Many older games struggle to launch on new operating systems.
You might be right, but I'm still running some old titles like Civ III on my Windows 11. So it's hit or miss.
That's a bummer! My dad isn’t tech-savvy, so I’ll look into Steam as a backup option. Thanks!
You might have luck finding Doom on abandonware sites like abandonware.com. They usually have patches to get them running on modern PCs without needing the CD drive. Some may still require DOSBox, though.

Would I still need a CD adapter for that?
