I'm looking for advice on how to restart my programming career now that I'm 34. I've spent over 3 years working in ERP administration, where I've focused on providing support, training users, and identifying system issues. I've been involved in verifying software prototypes and analyzing system designs, and I have a good grasp of business modules like Accounts, Inventory, LC, and Sales.
Lately, I've grown dissatisfied with my job as I don't see much potential for career progression or salary growth in ERP administration. Previously, I had a solid background in programming from my time as a Junior Programmer, where I worked with PHP, Laravel, vanilla JavaScript, API integration, and jQuery, along with a good understanding of SQL databases.
Now, I want to transition back into programming. Considering my background, what steps should I take to become a skilled software engineer and secure remote work or freelancing opportunities? In a rapidly evolving AI-driven job market, how can I best adapt and enhance my programming skills? I'm seeking a clear roadmap to rebuild my career and achieve a good salary.

If you're comfortable with PHP and Laravel, I suggest looking for Laravel development jobs. The path seems simple: learn the needed tech skills and start applying to relevant positions. Just be aware that you'll be competing with others who might use AI tools in their job applications.
You're already in a great position to pivot! I was in a similar situation; I worked in an ERP setting and managed to transition to the development team due to my understanding of the system. Have you considered using your knowledge at work to persuade them to support your development goals? It might be worth discussing training opportunities with your manager!

I did talk to my manager about wanting to develop new features and reports, but we don't have an internal dev team since all our software is outsourced. That's why I'm actively searching for a new job.
