How can I recover files from a MacBook that won’t boot?

My mom's MacBook Air (Model A1465) has stopped booting, and I have no idea how to help since I'm more of a PC/Android user. I'm looking for a simple way to retrieve her files from the hard drive. Is there a do-it-yourself method for someone who's not very tech-savvy, or is it better to take it to an Apple Store or a repair shop? Thanks for any advice!

Another option could be to check if there are any backups available. Restoring from a backup might be an easier solution if that’s set up already.

Could you explain how to access a backup? I'm not sure where to find that.

Just curious, what types of files are we talking about? Are they basic text files, or are they stored in a specific recipe app?

They’re mostly text files and PDFs.

The SSD in her MacBook is removable. You just need to take out one screw along with a few screws on the bottom, and you can pull out the SSD. If you get an OWC Envoy enclosure (they're around $100), you can connect it to another computer and access the files directly. It’s pretty straightforward, even if you're not super tech-savvy!

Thanks for the tip! I'll chat with my dad about getting the enclosure. Most of the files are just recipes, but we really want to make sure we don’t lose anything important.
