I've lost access to my Apple ID because my ex set the password and recovery email. It's really important for me to regain access to view my old iCloud photos, especially those of my kids when they were babies. I can provide proof that the account belongs to me, using old devices and my ID. I'm looking for legitimate methods supported by Apple to recover my account—no workarounds or rule-breaking, please! Has anyone been through this process and succeeded? I'd appreciate any tips on dealing with Apple Support for regaining access.

Once you regain access, I would suggest downloading all your photos and any important files from iCloud immediately. Also, log out of your devices to prevent them from locking you out again. Consider creating a new email that only you control and possibly setting up a new Apple ID to avoid further issues.
Do you have access to the recovery email? If you don't, it could be tough to prove that the account is yours, which might prevent you from getting back in.
Have you tried checking if you have access to the trusted phone number linked to your account? You can reset your password using that number. Alternatively, you could visit iforgot.apple.com for account recovery. Just keep in mind that if your ex cancels the recovery process, you might end up stuck in a loop. Unfortunately, Apple support isn't able to override account settings, so your best bet is to hope they don't intervene during recovery.
I actually managed to regain access using this method! It turned out to be his phone number, but I managed to answer the security questions, and then I changed everything back to my information. Thanks for the tip!

Unfortunately, he set the recovery email to his own, so I can't access that.
