I used to work at a startup that provided me with a MacBook Pro, but then the startup closed down. I tried to reset the MacBook to use it for personal purposes, but the process was taking too long, so I canceled it. When I restarted the Mac, I encountered an Activation Lock screen, and the email linked to it is not mine. I've attempted different methods to remove the lock, but nothing has worked. Is there any way to unlock the MacBook now, or has it become completely unusable? I don't have proof of purchase or any connection to the previous startup, but I can show that my personal account was logged in on this Mac and I can see it in my iCloud account.

Unfortunately, I think it’s a paperweight at this point. The Activation Lock is pretty tough to bypass without the original owner’s info.
I had a similar issue with an old iPod touch that ended up being useless. It’s important to check for Activation Lock before purchasing second-hand devices! If you can’t contact anyone from the startup, your best bet might be to recycle it through Apple instead of trashing it.
It sounds like the MacBook still belongs to the startup, so technically someone else now owns it. You might not be able to unlock it easily without some proof of ownership.
Definitely just recycle it responsibly! Don’t throw it in a lake; that’s not cool. Apple has a recycling program, which is a good way to properly dispose of it.
