I recently inherited an iPhone 7 from my grandpa, who has passed away. Unfortunately, I don't have the original proof of purchase since he bought it second-hand. Plus, I don't have any of his old passcodes or access to his iCloud account. Am I left with an unusable device?

I'm really sorry to say this, but it sounds like you're pretty much stuck with a locked device. You might consider trading it in for a discount on a new phone, but proof of ownership could be required for that too.

If you have access to your grandpa's death certificate, you could upload a photo of it to Apple. This might help you get the activation lock removed so you can restore the device. Just check their support page for details on how to do this!

Unfortunately, yes, you have a brick there. Apple implements these locks to help prevent theft, which is a good thing overall, even if it’s frustrating right now.
