How Can I Reset My Late Aunt’s Apple ID on Her iPad?

My aunt recently passed away, and as her next of kin, I've inherited her brand new Apple iPad. The issue is that we don't know what Apple ID and password she used to set it up. When I contacted Apple for help, they told me I need legal documents to prove that we are her next of kin, which would require hiring a lawyer—something I'd like to avoid if possible since it can be costly. Unfortunately, they won't accept just her death certificate. Is there any way to reset the iPad and bypass the Apple ID and password without going through this long legal process?

Resetting the iPad is pretty straightforward, but in your case, Apple will typically need a proof of purchase to assist you. If hiring a lawyer isn’t an option, you might want to dig through your aunt's belongings for a digital receipt or any documents that show ownership of the iPad.

Yeah, we're also searching through her stuff to find something like that. She might have kept a digital receipt in her email or something.

If you have a copy of her will that designates you as the next of kin, that should suffice. You might not even need a lawyer for that. Having the documentation ready could simplify other processes too, like handling the banks and changing ownership of her assets.
