How Can I Revive My Old iMac for Better Performance?

I have a Late 2013 iMac 27-inch running macOS Catalina 10.15.8, but I've hit a wall since it no longer supports the latest version of Google Chrome, making some websites unusable. I'm hoping to breathe new life into my iMac and use the existing monitor as part of a solution. Is there a way to achieve this? Any advice on what I can do, especially in simple terms, would be greatly appreciated!

I think you're asking if you want your old iMac to somehow function like a new one, but that’s tough! If you want to use the iMac as a screen for a new device, that might work. But let’s be real, the hardware limitations of a 2013 model mean it can't be magically transformed into a new PC. It's just not feasible.

Honestly, your best bet is to get a newer Mac or MacBook. Many apps aren’t doing updates for older systems like yours, which makes extensive upgrades hard. Apple doesn’t support new macOS versions on your machine either, so you might hit some walls there. Sorry to say, but that iMac is quite outdated in tech years.

If you're looking to speed things up, you might want to consider alternatives to Chrome. Firefox still offers an Extended Support Release version that might work better for you. And hey, upgrading your RAM can make a huge difference! Have you looked into adding more RAM or even an SSD? My family’s iMac runs like a dream since I bumped it up to 40GB of RAM and installed a Samsung external SSD.

Your iMac does have "target display mode," which means you could potentially use it as a monitor for another older Mac, but that's pretty limited. Instead, consider using OpenCore Legacy Patcher to get a newer macOS running on it! It's a bit technical, but it could really extend the life of your iMac. For sure! I also found a good video on using AirPlay, but it does have some lag, so keep that in mind if you go that route.

Your iMac is pretty old, and while it's not totally useless, you're not going to make it "like new." Using something like OpenCore might offer you a way to try newer OS versions. Installing Linux is also an option—it can work pretty well on older hardware. Some friends of mine have had success with Zorin OS; it’s user-friendly!
