I have an old hard drive and an SSD from my first PC build that I no longer need, and I'm looking for ways to ensure the data on them is completely irrecoverable. The hard drive has failed, so I'm not confident it will work long enough to format it. I also don't have the means to connect the SSD to my new computer since I lack the necessary cables. I've heard of using a degausser for the HDD, but I'd prefer to take care of the destruction myself. The screws on the HDD are round, making it tough to open, and I'm unsure how to properly destroy the SSD. Is using a hammer a viable option? I've never disposed of storage drives before, so I'm looking for the best approach here.

For the HDD, full destruction is the way to go! You can take it apart and shred the platters or just drill holes through the whole thing to ensure data can't be recovered. The SSD is more valuable, but if you’re determined to destroy it, drilling through those little black chips should do the trick. That way, even if someone tries to recover, it won’t work!
Honestly, with the failed HDD, your best bet might just be to take a hammer and smash it. While data can technically be recovered, most people won’t go through that trouble, so a good smack should do it. As for the SSD, yes, you could use a hammer to crack the chips, but if you want to be a bit more cautious, consider using a power drill to make several holes through the chips. Just be careful with the bits flying around!
Yeah, a hammer works great! Just make sure to wear protective eyewear. You don’t want any flying debris hitting you.
A hammer will do, no fancy tools needed. Just make sure you don't end up with sharp pieces flying at you, safety first!
If you're feeling adventurous, some people use thermite or even take it to a professional that specializes in data destruction. But if you're doing it yourself, smashing or drilling is probably the easiest route!
You can always just drill several holes through the HDD and the SSD. Some folks even recommend doing this with a shotgun for maximum effect, but that’s a bit extreme! Just one hole through each significant chip on the SSD and the platters of the HDD should ensure the data is gone forever.
Or you could just smash the SSD, but definitely get those platters out of the HDD!

Totally agree. It's surprising how much people underestimate properly destroying old hardware. Better safe than sorry!
