How can I safely format a Micro SD card from a sketchy seller?

I recently bought a used Steam Deck that was supposed to be a 256 GB model, but it only had a 64 GB card in it. After dispute with the seller, who claimed shipping issues, I received a 256 GB Micro SD card instead. I'm wary about using it since the seller seems shady, and I want to avoid any potential malware. The Steam Deck is working fine and I have a receipt, but I don't want to involve myself with the seller any further. Can I safely format this card using my Steam Deck, or do I need to take additional precautions to avoid any viruses?

If you really want to try it, consider using an older laptop that isn’t connected to the internet for formatting. That way, if there's anything nasty, it won't reach your main device.

I'll pass on that. Just tossing it feels like the best option for me.

If you're really concerned about malware, it might be safer to forgo using that card altogether. A brand new 256 GB micro SD is pretty affordable these days, so why risk it?

I totally get that, but I'm just a student trying to save money. Maybe there's a way to salvage it?

You can check out the official SD card formatter from the SD Association. It's a reliable tool for formatting SD cards. But make sure you really want to risk it!

Honestly, you're better off tossing it. It's just not worth the risk, especially if the seller is sketchy. Protect your Steam Deck!

Yeah, I think I'll just throw it away. Not worth the potential hassle.

Putting it in your Steam Deck and formatting it should be fine as long as you don’t run any suspicious files. Just be cautious, the Steam Deck is your bigger concern anyway.
