How can I safely move my PC parts when relocating overseas?

I'm moving overseas soon and I'd like to avoid paying a ton for moving my entire PC setup. Since I'll only be gone for about a year, it doesn't seem worth it to buy a new one. I'm considering taking apart my PC and just bringing the individual components, leaving the case behind. However, I don't have the original boxes for the parts, and I don't have much experience building PCs. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

You should really consider where you're moving to and the prices there. It might actually be cheaper to buy a new case than pay to ship your old one. If you do disassemble your system, make sure to send the GPU and cooling components separately, as those tend to be more fragile. Also, don't forget to check if you’ll need new power cables once you arrive!

The cheapest option would be to get rid of the case and maybe even the cooler depending on space. Just pack the main components in your carry-on, and buy a new case when you settle in. It's super straightforward!

I've done this a few times, even for long-distance moves. My approach is to disassemble the PC and keep each component in ESD protection. If you don't have the original boxes, that's okay—just wrap them in bubble wrap. It's usually fine to keep the CPU attached to the motherboard, and I’ve never had any issues doing this.

What if I don't have the original boxes? Is it still safe to move them just wrapped in bubble wrap?

If you're only going for a year, I'd suggest you might just want to get a laptop for that time. There are decent options out there that can handle design software, plus they'll take up way less space. Also consider getting a second-hand Steam Deck or similar for gaming on the go!

I'm using some heavy software for my freelance work, so I might need to look into a laptop that can handle that.
