Hey everyone! I'm looking for some straightforward instructions on how to connect a Windows 7 PC with my Windows 11 PC. My wife is keen on keeping that old Windows 7 machine around, and I'd like to do a few things:
- I want to be able to open and work on files from the Windows 7 computer on my Windows 11 computer.
- I need to access the Windows 7 PC remotely from my Windows 11 machine, preferably to access files.
- It would be great to print from my Windows 11 PC to a printer that's attached to the Windows 7 PC.
- I also want both computers to see and make use of any external/network storage (like a NAS or USB drive) connected to either machine.
- Lastly, if the NAS fails, I need a way to ensure that the USB backup connected to it is still accessible to both PCs.
Right now, I can see my Windows 11 PC from the Windows 7 machine, but when I try to click on it, I just hear a weird noise and can't access it. Is there a reliable way to set all this up? Are there any free software options that could help? We often deal with large design files and use ThumbPlus a lot. Thanks a bunch!

Honestly, I'd be cautious about connecting your Windows 7 machine to any network. It's not receiving security updates anymore, so it's pretty vulnerable. If you really need access to it, consider transferring files to your NAS and think about replacing the Windows 7 PC altogether. It's just not safe.
If you have to keep using Windows 7, at least isolate it from your main network. Try copying important files off it to safer storage. Maybe invest in a cheaper laptop or upgrade your existing setup instead. You really don't want to put your entire network at risk for that old machine.
Totally agree! If you can upgrade or replace it, that would be the best move. Safety first!

Yeah, it’s a big risk! Even behind a firewall, the Windows 7 machine could be compromised really quickly. Just be careful!
