Hi everyone! We're moving to a new city, and my young child wants to keep in touch with friends through a WhatsApp group. Initially, I said no but decided to explore the options. I'm quite concerned about network security since kids can sometimes be unpredictable when it comes to technology. I want to limit the device to just this WhatsApp group with no access to browsing, email, or phone calls.
I've thought about using a SIM card with a data plan, but that could get pricey with kids possibly sharing silly videos all the time. I also looked into OpenDNS and guest Wi-Fi but I'm unsure about its security levels and blocking potential phishing sites.
Does anyone have any feasible suggestions for managing this? I want him to be able to use WhatsApp while ensuring our home and work networks remain secure and that he doesn't have unrestricted internet access. Thanks!

Have you checked into using parental controls? They can help restrict app access and keep things in check when it comes to kids using devices.
I recommend trying Norton Family. You can choose which apps are allowed, such as WhatsApp, and set specific time limits. Some users on here might not love Norton, but I find their endpoint protection and VPN helpful.
Thanks, I'll look into it! I've steered clear of Norton for a while since their products have felt bloated, but maybe it's worth a second look.
I feel like restricting your kid to just WhatsApp might be a bit strict, but hey, it’s your call. You could try out Family Link—it’s pretty effective for managing device access.
I get where you’re coming from, and he’s disciplined. My concern is potential risks like deceptive ads or harmful links from friends. I’ve told him he can always browse anything tricky on my computer together with me!
As long as you use single app mode, it should work great! I think Apple Configurator is a free tool that might help you achieve this.
Thanks for the tip! I didn’t know about Apple Configurator. Using that with guest Wi-Fi in single app mode could definitely be the solution.
You should consider using Assistive Access mode. This lets you limit the apps used while also allowing you to set a spending cap on the data plan, like a £0 spend limit. It stops any charges when they hit the cap until next month.
I'm not too familiar with Apple products, unfortunately. Are these controls usually detailed enough for something like this?
