How Can I Stop Breaking My Laptop Chargers?

I've owned a Lenovo IdeaPad 5 for a couple of years and have gone through two chargers in a very short time. The original pin-type charger lasted from 2021 until January 2025, but it broke then, and I had to get a USB-C charger, which also stopped working just two days ago. I'm worried about battery health since I can't check it right now since my laptop is dead. I usually charge using an extension cord, which sparks sometimes when I plug it in; I even have one with a switch to turn it on. Is that a bad practice? I just want to know what I might be doing wrong or how to prevent this from happening again with my chargers.

If you’re buying cheaper chargers or generic brands, that could be an issue too. Investing in a reputable brand like Anker can make a difference. They usually have better durability and safety features. Plus, always remember to ensure your charger isn’t getting stepped on or strained while in use because that can cause wear and tear quickly.

I didn’t realize Anker had good options. I’ll definitely consider it next time!

One of the main things you could do is be cautious with how you handle your chargers. Make sure the USB-C end isn’t bending too much; many people damage their chargers this way by letting the cable bend at weird angles, which can ruin the wiring inside. It might also help to unplug the charger when you move your laptop to avoid pulling on the cord.

Thanks, I really will try to be more careful with that!

It sounds like there might be an issue with the power supply in your house. You might want to look into getting a small UPS (uninterruptible power supply) that has auto voltage regulation. It can help maintain a consistent power level for your laptop and prevent future charger damage. Also, consider checking with an electrician if you're having consistent sparking; that could be a sign of deeper electrical issues at home.

That does sound like something I should look into! I'll get the outlet checked out.
