How Can I Stop People from Interrupting My Calls at Work?

I'm looking for strategies to prevent people from approaching my desk while I'm on a call. I've tried using a light and wearing headphones to signal I'm busy, but people still seem to ignore it. Since my office doesn't have a door, it's challenging. Any suggestions for keeping distractions at bay during calls?

If you're on a call and someone approaches, just point to your phone or headphones to show you’re busy. Usually, they'll back off if they see you're engaged in a conversation, but you might have to say "I'm on a call" if they persist.

Totally! I've used that method, and if they still don’t get it, sometimes it’s necessary to be a bit firmer.

True, some folks just don't understand that a call means they should not interrupt. It can be tough to handle!

One effective way to handle this is to be more direct and firm with your boundaries. When someone walks in while you're not on a call, kindly remind them to go through the proper channels for assistance. Over time, they'll learn not to interrupt you during your own work hours.

That's a smart approach! Some people just don’t want to deal with processes and often expect instant help. I’ve faced the same issue and training them can take some time.

It’s definitely true! Creating this habit helps develop a culture of respect for boundaries.

The simplest solution is to ignore them while you're on a call. Most people understand to give you space if you don’t acknowledge them. But remember, you can also say something like ‘sorry, I’m on a call’ if they get too close!

That's good advice! Being nonverbal sometimes works better than trying to explain.

For sure! Sometimes just turning away makes it clear you’re busy.

One tactic that worked for me was making strong use of your office's ticketing system. When people come with requests, just say you're busy at the moment, and they need to submit a ticket. This promotes patience and also reinforces the importance of proper protocols.

I love this! Instituting a clear process really helps manage expectations from colleagues.

Exactly! Implementing boundaries with methods like this will definitely cultivate more professional interactions.

Get a number calling system like ‘take a number’ machines with a sign saying 'Now Serving: 7'. It could add some humor and help deter walk-ups by making them realize they need to wait their turn.

That sounds hilarious! I might just try that to lighten the mood around my overloaded desk.

I like the creativity! Even if it’s tongue-in-cheek, it might just get people to think twice before approaching.
