How Can I Transfer User Files to My D Drive Without Risking My Computer?

I'm looking to save space on my C drive by using mklink to transfer my user files to my D drive. However, I'm concerned that if I delete the files from my C drive, it might cause issues with my computer. Can anyone clarify if it's safe to delete those files after moving them?

Avoid using apps for this. Go to your user profile, right-click a folder (like Documents or Images), select Properties, then change the location to your desired drive in the Location tab. Just click apply and wait for it to update.

You can usually move most library folders like Documents, Pictures, and Downloads by right-clicking on them and selecting the 'Location' tab under properties. For those, it's often easier to use the built-in moving option instead of mklink.

Just keep in mind that hard links don’t generally work across different drives, so you’ll want to be cautious.

You should be fine moving personal files, as long as they aren't required by any programs or Windows itself. Just double-check what you're deleting!

I recommend only moving personal files. Important system files and app data need to stay on the C drive to function properly. You can free up space by clearing out temporary files as well.
