Is Upgrading My BIOS Worth the Risk?

Hey everyone! I'm not really a tech expert, but I bought a pre-built PC around a year and a half ago, and I've been using it just as it came. Lately, I've been experiencing some issues with a game called Marvel Rivals, getting a lot of UE errors related to memory. I suspect it might be linked to my BIOS version since I can't seem to use the XMP profile for my RAM. Whenever I try, I just get a black screen that says 'memory overclock failure,' and then it reboots back to BIOS.

When I try to launch Marvel Rivals through Steam or Epic, it crashes multiple times before finally loading—after that, the game runs perfectly fine. Do you think updating my BIOS could help solve this problem? Or is it too risky? Would I be better off taking it to a repair shop? Here's some quick info: my motherboard is a B760 Gaming Plus Wifi, my CPU is an Intel i9 12900K, and my BIOS build date is from 10/30/2023.

Updating the BIOS isn't too complicated, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. But first, what memory kit are you using and what specific overclock settings have you tried? Sometimes that can lead to issues as well.

A BIOS update could be exactly what you need! But, before you do that, check your RAM placement. On your motherboard, if you have two sticks, they should be in the 2nd and 4th slots. If they’re in the wrong slots, XMP won’t work properly. If you're uncomfortable with BIOS updates, a shop could handle it for you pretty quickly. Just a heads up that your i9-12900K is powerful, but it works best on a Z-series motherboard. You might not be getting the best performance out of it. After a BIOS update, make sure you select the 'Intel Default' power profile and adjust the 'CPU Lite Load' setting to Mode 9 or 12 to help with cooling and voltage.
