How Can I Transition from Virtualization to Cloud DevOps in 2-3 Years?

I'm currently working in a service-based company, focusing on Virtualization using technologies like Vsphere and Nutanix. I've developed an interest in Cloud Computing and have been self-learning, improving my bash scripting skills through various personal projects and earning certifications. However, I'm unsure how to make the shift from a Virtualization Engineer role to a Cloud Computing position, especially since many job listings require 4+ years of experience. Would my own projects count as relevant experience? Should I consider switching internally to a cloud-based project before applying to different companies? What would be a good roadmap to enter the cloud field? At times, it feels overwhelming trying to master everything from bash scripting to Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and Jenkins. I'm looking for advice to help clarify my path and streamline my efforts.

If you have the chance, switching internally to a cloud-focused project is a smart move. It gives you valuable experience, especially in understanding the developer’s viewpoint in complex cloud systems. As for mastering bash and moving to Python, keep in mind that cloud roles require more declarative tools rather than just scripting, so make sure you're comfortable with foundational tools before applying for positions requiring extensive experience. Just a heads-up, cloud DevOps roles typically aren't entry-level. I had nearly 10 years of experience before landing my first cloud job. Keep building your skills and don't rush the process—experience counts!

You're in a great position because virtualization skills transfer well to cloud roles! Focus on mastering one cloud platform, like AWS or Azure, and complete a couple of solid projects using Terraform and Docker. Your personal projects and certifications will count, so highlight your hybrid skills and automation experience on your resume. Remember, don't try to learn everything at once—pace yourself.

To make the transition, you definitely need to work on understanding the essential cloud technologies like Terraform and Docker. A good project to showcase would be setting up a VM in AWS or Azure using Terraform, installing Docker on it, and creating a simple web app with Python (Flask). You could even automate the deployment process with GitHub Actions. This kind of project will give you real-world experience to discuss in interviews.
