How Can I Transition into a Junior DevOps Role?

Hi everyone! I'm 25 and recently graduated with a computer science degree. I'm looking to break into a junior DevOps role, preferably focusing on Azure, but I don't have any formal DevOps experience yet. I have about 2.5 years of experience as a cloud/Windows system administrator. During this time, I've managed multi-region Azure cloud services focusing on VM management, networking, and user account creation. I'm also familiar with Azure CLI scripting at a junior level, Terraform basics, and CI/CD pipeline setups using Jenkins, Git, GitHub Actions, and webhooks. I have some experience with containerization in Docker and Linux, and I'd consider my skills in these areas to be solid. My question is: what else should I learn or do to successfully transition into DevOps? Should I be applying for roles now, and how important are personal projects on my resume? Should I also explore development further? Thanks in advance for your help!

You've actually got a pretty solid foundation with 2.5 years of Azure, Terraform, Docker, and CI/CD experience. You should definitely start applying for junior DevOps roles instead of waiting for more skills. Just make sure to include 1 or 2 portfolio projects that demonstrate an end-to-end pipeline or infrastructure setup. A README explaining what you did and why will really help you stand out to recruiters.

Your main gap seems to be hands-on experience rather than just learning more tools. Dive into some real projects! You could build infrastructure on a platform like DigitalOcean, integrate Terraform and Docker, and utilize CI/CD processes. I recommend following a structured learning path like the ones on devops-daily.com or roadmap.sh, and don't forget to include your personal projects and open-source contributions on your resume.

Consider contributing to open-source projects! It's a great way to gain hands-on experience and show your commitment to learning. Just check out a project that interests you and see if they have any easy issues to tackle.

Consider earning a related certification. It could help boost your credibility and give you a better chance at landing an entry-level position.
