Hey everyone! I haven't really utilized my PC for gaming in quite some time, and I'm looking to modernize it a bit instead of building a completely new setup. Here's what I've got:
- Ryzen 7 1700X
- ASUS GTX 1080 Strix (8GB)
- 16GB G.Skill Trident Z DDR4 3000
- MSI B350 Gaming Pro Carbon
- Samsung 960 EVO 500GB NVMe
- WD Black 2TB HDD
- NZXT Kraken X62 280mm AIO
- EVGA SuperNOVA G2 650W (Gold)
- NZXT H440 case
This system used to perform well, and I'd like to refresh it wisely rather than replacing parts unnecessarily. If this were your setup, what would you choose to upgrade first? Is it better to stick with the B350 motherboard and upgrade the CPU, or should I consider shifting to a newer platform? Also, is my 650W PSU still adequate for current GPUs? I'm open to investing in upgrades that make sense for performance without throwing money away. Thanks for any advice!

You could update the BIOS to make your motherboard compatible with AMD's 5000 series processors. Going for a 5700 or 5800X would be a fantastic upgrade, especially if you want to use the existing B350 board. Pair it with a 5060 or 9060 XT for a nice boost, and your current setup should handle that well. Just remember, if you push too far, you might need to think about a new platform. Also, with current RAM prices being high, it could get pricey if you decide to swap everything.
Just a heads up, the B350 runs on PCIe 3.0, so you won't be able to use Nvidia's 60 class cards effectively since they operate at x8.
