How can I use Remote Desktop from outside my home network?

I'm trying to use the Remote Desktop app on my MacBook to access my home computer, and it works perfectly when I'm connected to the same WiFi. However, when I'm away from home, I keep getting an 'unable to connect' error. I've spent hours trying to figure out a solution and can't seem to find anything. I feel like it must be a straightforward fix, but I need some help! What can I do to resolve this?

To connect remotely, you usually need to be on the same network, which is why you’re having trouble when away from home. Have you considered using a VPN? Setting up a VPN server at home allows you to virtually connect as if you were on your home network. Once connected to the VPN, you can use your Remote Desktop client without issues. Just be aware that you might need to adjust some firewall settings to make it work smoothly.

Another thing to look into is whether your home firewall allows for Remote Desktop connections. Some people have opened up a port specifically for RDP, but that can be risky in terms of security. If you're not super comfortable with setting up a VPN, it might be worth researching how people are successfully connecting while ensuring their networks stay secure.
