How Do I Get Started in Networking as a Computer Technician?

I'm currently working as a computer technician in an IT sector, and while I know how to handle maintenance, configurations, and formatting for computers and notebooks, the job now demands knowledge about networks and infrastructure. I need to familiarize myself with switches, racks, Active Directory machines, crimping, and firewalls. It's been a tough situation since I recently lost a colleague with 20 years of experience in the field, and now I'm on my own. I'm feeling lost and desperate to learn. Where should I begin my studies to ensure I keep my job?

Have you got any foundation in basic networking? It’d be super helpful for you to know things like DHCP and VLANs. If you’re not familiar yet, dive into those concepts immediately! As for the gear you’ll be using, don't worry too much about Cisco switches – they can be tricky since they're often terminal-based. You might want to look for guides specific to what you have. Let me know if you want tips on tools like Wireshark or Nmap, and good luck with the crimping! YouTube is your friend for that.

It sounds like you're in a tough spot, especially losing a veteran colleague. Since you're starting fresh, I'd recommend focusing on getting certifications relevant to networking. Many employers will support you with training costs. Even though I learned a lot from experiences on-site, certifications like the CCNA really lay the groundwork. Also, try to find any resources or documentation your colleague might have left behind. It can be incredibly valuable.

During my IT studies, we covered basic networking, which is a must in your field. I can't share all the materials publicly, but if you want more info, just hit me up privately. I’m happy to help however I can!
