How do I get started with Linux in simple terms?

I've been considering switching from Windows 10 to a Linux distribution, especially since I'm not thrilled about the push to Windows 11 and I'm tired of various Windows issues. I need to wipe my computer soon, so I've been experimenting with different Linux distros in VirtualBox, including Ubuntu, Debian, and MX Linux. I'm planning to try Kubuntu and Mint as well since I'm looking for something user-friendly. However, I'm struggling to understand the 'language' of Linux. I've dabbled with the terminal but it feels overwhelming, and I'm having trouble getting my password to work and understanding why my user isn't listed in the sudo group. Also, I find community posts confusing. Is there a good way to learn the basics of Linux terminology and the command line?

Try out some interactive games to get a grip on commands, like "Terminus" or "Cmdchallenge." They make learning fun! If you want to avoid the terminal, Linux Mint is very user-friendly with a GUI that resembles Windows, making it easier to navigate.

I thought about Mint; it's been nice so far with Kubuntu, but I'll check those games out!

Linux is different from Windows, but you'll find resources like 'Linux for Dummies' really helpful to get started. Books and wikis are great for learning the basics!

YouTube is a goldmine for learning Linux. Look for videos that specifically cover your distro. For example, check out this intro to Linux Mint and subscribe to channels that explain it well.

You have to add your user to the sudo group on Debian; it doesn't do this automatically. Stick with a friendly distro like Mint and take your learning step by step, and you'll get the hang of it.

That's interesting! Thanks for the tip!

Just read the prompts during installation; it usually explains it!

Linux is all about being in control, where you can customize everything. Learning the language means getting used to configuration files and command-line tools. Start with small tasks and build up your knowledge from there.

Thank you! That makes sense.

You're dealing with technical jargon. Instead of trying to learn everything at once, focus on understanding specific terms and commands. Ask detailed questions in forums to get clarity.

Good point! I'll keep that in mind.

If it's too confusing, maybe stick with Windows for now? There's nothing wrong with that!

I appreciate the concern, but I'm determined to give Linux a serious shot!
