I have a 2015 Dell Inspiron with a broken drive, but I've got a spare 250GB drive from my current PC. Instead of tossing the laptop, I'd like to install Linux on it since it still works well. I've never done this before, so I'm unsure where to begin. I assume I just need to choose a Linux distribution and figure out how to install it. This laptop won't be my primary computer, but I think it will be great for experimenting and as a backup. What should I do first?

We really need to know the specs of your Dell Inspiron to give the best advice! Things like RAM, CPU, and GPU matter a lot. If you've got at least 8GB of RAM, I'd highly suggest looking into Ubuntu MATE or Lubuntu. They tend to run smoother compared to Mint Cinnamon, especially if your laptop is older.
First things first, grab a USB flash drive—16GB should do the trick! Then, I'd recommend looking into lightweight distros like Zorin OS Lite or Linux Mint with XFCE. You'll need to create a bootable USB using tools like Rufus or EtchDroid (if you're using Android). After that, you can find a tutorial on YouTube that walks you through the installation process, including how to enter the BIOS or boot menu on your laptop. Good luck!
Just make sure to share some details about your system regarding specs—especially RAM and processor! If your laptop has a 64-bit processor and at least 4GB of RAM, you can run pretty much any Linux distro you like. Less RAM means you'll need to be more selective about your choices.
Don't forget to mention your PC's specs in your post! It really helps us give better advice. Knowing the size of your RAM, what CPU and GPU you've got, and even what kind of wireless adapter you’re using can really make a difference.

Zorin Lite is actually getting discontinued, but Zorin's main version is light enough for most tasks!
