I'm in a bit of a tricky situation here. I've never opened up a laptop before, and I'm a bit nervous about damaging anything or even hurting myself. My laptop's GPU fan isn't functioning properly, and I want to check if there's a connection issue or if it just needs some cleaning. When it comes to opening it up, is it enough to unplug the device and perform a standard shutdown before I disconnect the battery? Should I also do a 30-second power button press to discharge any static electricity? Is doing that press frequently bad for the computer? I've done it a few times to fix issues with my network adapters, but I'm worried about causing any damage by doing it too often.

After powering down your laptop and unplugging it, pressing the power button for about 30 seconds is a good way to ensure any residual power is cleared out from the motherboard. I do the same with my MSI laptop—after a shutdown, I just take out the battery before accessing the internals. So yeah, you're on the right track!
Awesome, that makes me feel better! I saw that I can unplug the battery connection directly after shutting down, so I should be good to go once I do that.
