How Do You Approach Coding for Video Games?

I'm finding myself constantly stuck when it comes to coding for video games and could really use some advice. I often have to Google things because I don't know what to do next, and sometimes I give up entirely. When I try to learn game development through YouTube videos, like those from Brackeys, it feels like nothing really clicks for me, and I just end up stuck in tutorial mode. After watching a recent game award event where one of the developers mentioned that they also learned through YouTube, I'm curious about how they manage to build something as big as Expedition 33. I want to eventually work for a game company, but I'm unsure where to start or how to keep progressing.

It really helps to know what tools you're using for your games. I'd suggest starting with simpler tools like Scratch or Pygame before diving into something complex like Unity. When I first tried Unity, it felt overwhelming and I had to set it aside for a bit.

I started with Unity too, but I'm thinking of trying Unreal later on. Just not ready for that leap yet!

Just a FYI, a lot of the team behind Expedition 33 had experience from working at Ubisoft, so they had a solid foundation. Game development is pretty challenging because you need to grasp general programming, engine usage, and various game development techniques. I recommend focusing on learning programming basics first, then pick an engine to learn. It's a lot of work but definitely rewarding!
