I'm curious about what steps you all take when someone uses a company laptop to take an exam that doesn't allow certain remote monitoring or access tools. Many exam vendors disallow things like RMM software and screen sharing programs. I've had to remove apps like Teams, Zoom, and Splashtop for this reason. Do you just prohibit using company devices for these exams, or do you strip everything off the laptops, leaving yourself without access to help them? And what do you do with the laptop after they take the exam? Are they expected to return it for reinstallation?

We have laptops that are used exclusively for testing, totally wiped clean of any work-related software. They've got only the basic OS and are set up on a guest network. It’s easy for users to check them out, and we just wipe them down after each use to get them back to factory settings.
Honestly, if it's a company requirement, we'll sometimes even set up an exam kiosk in the office with a clean machine. We offer a few older laptops that can be rented out for exams. If the employee is on their own time, we just direct them to use their personal devices and remind them about the security policies.
In our company, if a person is taking a class on their own time, we require that they use their personal device. We can't compromise security on our laptops. For employees pursuing degrees or certifications, it's typically expected they buy their own laptops. If the company has sponsored the training, then we find ways to accommodate them, like providing a clean loaner laptop specifically for exams.
I think having dedicated exam laptops is a practical solution. We set them up in a separate network and make sure they are wiped clean after each use. It minimizes risk and ensures the exam takers have a smooth experience without interfering management tools.
It really depends on the situation. If it’s an exam paid for by the company, we might set them up with a dedicated device that’s wiped clean and locked down. This way, they can take their test without worrying about any company software interfering. Sometimes we create additional profiles or even set up a separate environment just for exams.
