How Do You Validate Backups in Your Organization?

I'm curious about how other organizations approach backup validation. My company requires us to perform monthly spot-checks on our VM backups, usually involving a handful of VMs. Currently, we validate each backup manually by mounting them to see if the VMs can boot, which is quite tedious. Do you have regular backup validation processes in place? How do you handle this in your organization?

Not validating your backups can lead to some serious headaches down the road. It's best to find a solution that allows you to test your backups in a virtual environment.

Veeam is a great option for automating the boot check. Just remember to have a disaster recovery plan in place in case your primary backup solution goes down!

It's crucial to test your backups; otherwise, they don't really count as backups. The extent of your testing can vary, but you should definitely have some systematic approach in place.

Even though it's a tedious task, we have discovered issues with some applications through our checks, so it’s definitely worth it!

Automating your backup validation can be a game changer! For instance, you could inject random data into a VM filesystem every night and then recover it weekly to check for existence and validity. A few days of coding and you'll have a nice dashboard to monitor compliance!
