How Does Dual Channel RAM Work?

I'm trying to wrap my head around dual channel RAM. From what I understand, there are two channels available, each with its own RAM slots. I'm curious about several things: Can I use a combination of 2x8GB and 2x4GB RAM? Does the CAS Latency (CL) matter if they're not in the same channel? If two RAM sticks have similar specifications on paper, will they work fine in dual channel? And how important is it for the two channels to be in sync?

Using a 2x8GB and 2x4GB setup can work, but you might face some stability issues or speed limitations. Memory sticks in dual channels should ideally be identical for optimal performance.

So, if I stick with one brand for both, will that help? Like, if they're both CL30?
