How Long Does Apple Keep Trying to Charge for a Failed Subscription?

I signed up for a supposedly 'free trial' of an app back in mid-June, but the way it was presented was super confusing, and I ended up on a 1-year plan without realizing it. Thankfully, my card was empty at the time, so I wasn't charged, but now it's almost August, and I've still got access to the app while my subscription shows as 'active.' I've canceled my renewal in my Apple ID settings, but since I can't update or download other apps, it seems there's a billing issue. I'm curious about a couple of things: why is my subscription still active even though I was never charged? Also, can I create a new Apple ID? I've heard that Apple may try to charge for 60 to 90 days, and I'm already at 1.5 months without a resolution.

The reason your subscription still shows as active is that you’ve been using it. Apple tends to maintain a subscription as active if you access the service, regardless of whether you’ve been charged or not. Your best bet might be to let the payment process, then immediately request a refund. Just keep in mind that this process can be hit or miss, especially if Apple’s refund algorithm flags you.

If I decide to pay now and then request a refund, do you think I could still get it back? I've been told it’s all subject to approval and there’s no guarantee.
