How Long Does It Take to Get New Hardware Deployed in Big Companies?

I'm curious about the timeline for provisioning new hardware in large corporations. At my company, it can take many months to get new servers up and running — it feels like ages sometimes. There have been instances where hardware was out of warranty before it even got installed! Lately, it seems like we're looking at a minimum of six months. Is this a common experience in big companies, or do smaller ones face similar issues?

At our neighboring company with around 100 racks, it's not uncommon for new servers to sit for months before deployment. Even in our smaller firm, we often wait over six months just to get approval for hardware purchases.

The whole process took me three years to get some core switch replacements approved! Just when we finally managed to get them delivered, they announced EOL on them a week later. Talk about frustrating!

We've been discussing a server upgrade for about a year and a half now, and we're just starting the process. The time spent on justifying the budget and getting approvals really stretched out our timeline. It's tough!

It really depends on the importance of the hardware to business metrics. If it directly impacts performance metrics, it's usually expedited. Otherwise, be prepared for delays.

When I had control over it, getting hardware into production usually only took a couple of days after it landed in our data center. We could rack and make an entire server setup operational in a day with our team sharing the workload.
