I'm curious about how long thermal paste typically lasts. Is there a specific timeframe I should be looking at, or can I just apply and forget about it until I notice temperature issues? Also, I don't have the little spoon or spatula that some people use to apply it. Will that be a problem when I'm putting it on?

The lifespan of thermal paste can really depend on the brand. For example, I’ve had Noctua paste last an incredible 8 years before needing a change, but others may not hold up as long. If you're not facing any temperature issues, just leave it be. That tool doesn’t matter too much. A good amount of paste will spread when you tighten the heatsink.
Thermal paste doesn't have a strict expiration date. It's best to check when your temperatures start getting high, and that’s when you should think about reapplying it. As for the application tool, you don't need a spatula at all! Just use a pea-sized dot or make an X shape with the paste; that'll work just fine.
If your PC has been running fine for a long time and you're not encountering any overheating issues, there's no need to change the thermal paste. A common sign for reapplication is temperature spikes, but your paste can last for years without any problems. My buddy just cleaned and reapplied his thermal paste after 9.5 years, and his temps are back to normal!
In my experience, thermal paste can last way longer than you think. I have an old Core2Duo still running with AS5 thermal paste from years back! Just don’t worry unless you start having heat problems. If you keep an eye on your temps, you should be golden.
