I recently tried to clean out my Pixel 2 XL's charging port with a plastic toothpick since it hasn't been charging well lately. I suspect dust or lint might be the culprit, but the port doesn't look that dirty to me. How much dust or lint can actually interfere with the charging process? I'm hoping to get a little more life out of my phone, which I generally take good care of.

There isn't a specific amount of dust that definitely interferes. It can really vary from device to device and situation to situation.
The impact dust has can differ a lot based on the material and where it’s located. I recommend using compressed air specifically meant for electronics, some cotton swabs with a little rubbing alcohol, and a gentle touch to clean the port. Just ensure your charger is clean too!
I use a combination of blu-tack, plastic toothpicks, and compressed air. I can't say it's foolproof, but I've been doing it for years without issues. It works well for those tiny openings too!
Not much dust at all! When you plug in the charger, it can push some dust deeper into the port, and over time, even just half a millimeter of packed-in dust can prevent the charger from fitting properly.
It's natural wear and tear on the charging port that's the issue, rather than just dust. USB-C ports can be pretty delicate.
Over time, the charging port and cables wear out. It's not just dust; your port could be getting fragile, especially with USB-C connections.
