How Should I Approach Negotiating a Promotion and Pay Raise at Work?

I've been working as a junior sysadmin for two years, stepping in to fill the role of a retiring senior sysadmin. I'm set to get a promotion next month, but it won't be to a senior position or come with a corresponding salary increase, which doesn't sit right with me. Management seems pleased with my work, and our infrastructure relies heavily on what I do. I feel like I have a strong case for negotiating, but I genuinely enjoy my job and appreciate my manager, so I want to avoid any tension with my coworkers or damaging my relationships. Is it reasonable to anticipate that taking on senior sysadmin tasks should come with the pay and title to match? How can I negotiate for a higher salary without jeopardizing my position?

Going straight from junior to senior is a pretty big leap. Usually, there’s a middle step, so don’t feel disheartened if they want to promote you to a standard sysadmin role first. However, definitely aim to get a pay bump that reflects your hard work. Titles are less important than your pay, so focus on negotiating for the salary you believe you deserve!

Thanks for the insight! I guess that's a fair perspective. I just hope they recognize the effort I’m already putting in!

It sounds like you’re in a tricky spot! Focus on the responsibilities you’re handling now rather than just the title. It’s not uncommon for people to feel a title jump is necessary, but often it’s about the actual work you’re doing. Check similar jobs online to see what salaries are being offered based on the responsibilities you’re currently managing. Frame your request around market rates for those responsibilities, and you might have a stronger case!
