I have two identical M.2 SSDs I'm adding to my new build, and I want to ensure that I install Windows on the drive located in the primary M.2 slot. I'm looking for clever ways to mark the drives so I can easily tell them apart when it's time to install. Would it be a good idea to place a large file on one or maybe format one with a different file system like exFAT? I want to avoid the hassle of installing Windows, disassembling my PC, and then adding the second drive later. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

One simple solution is to only install the drive where you want the OS during the Windows setup, and add the second one afterwards. It’s quick and saves you from any confusion. You won’t have to worry about which drive is which if you only have one connected.
Check if your motherboard BIOS allows you to disable specific PCI-E/M.2 slots. That way, you can turn off the second drive and install Windows on the one you want without any mix-ups.
A great tip is to write down the serial numbers of the drives when you build your PC. Although you can’t see them during installation, you can confirm which drive is which afterward. It's a straightforward method to keep track.
Ooh, this is a good idea—thanks!
