I recently got an iPhone 4 that had iOS 4 on it. Over the weekend, I tried to update it to iOS 7 using iTunes to see how that version performs. Unfortunately, I ran into a problem where iTunes prompted me with an error message saying, 'There is a problem with the iPhone "iPhone" that requires it to be updated or restored.' I've already attempted the update, recovery, and DFU modes, trying different cables and USB ports, but it always goes back to the recovery screen. Is there anything related to iTunes that I might have missed?

When you attempt the update, are you getting any error messages, or does it just fail? If it seems to update but then goes back to recovery mode, this could indicate that the home button is being recognized as pressed. You might want to try using 3uTools to exit recovery mode, then disconnect the USB cable. Since the phone enters recovery mode with the home button pressed and USB connected, disconnecting the cable after you exit could help if the home button is stuck.
It sounds like the cellular baseband might be damaged. If it was in use before you tried the update, that could be a factor. Just because it was regularly used for basic tasks doesn’t mean the baseband is fine. It can still go bad suddenly during updates.

So, even with normal usage, if the baseband is fried, it could still cause this issue?
