How to Fix Overheating Issues with My RTX 2070 Super?

I've been using my PC for about five years now, but lately, it's been struggling to run recent games, even on the lowest settings. I suspect overheating is a major issue, particularly with my GPU. My current specs include an MSI B550 Tomahawk MAX WIFI motherboard, a Ryzen 5 5800X processor with a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 cooler, 16GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4 RAM, an EVGA Geforce RTX 2070 Super GPU, and a Phanteks Eclipse P400 case. When I tried playing Where Winds Meet on medium/low settings, MSI Afterburner showed my GPU temperatures hitting 94°C and my CPU at 84°C. The CPU temp isn't great, possibly due to the Hyper 212 cooler being underwhelming for the 5800X, but I'm particularly concerned about the GPU. The RGB lighting on the GPU has stopped working, and the fans weren't spinning at times when the temperature soared, even though they did kick back in after a reboot. I managed to lower the GPU temp to 89°C temporarily by aiming a small fan directly at it. I'm wondering if it's time for a new GPU or if there's a way to fix the overheating issue myself?

Repasting is a solid move! I heard the Thermalright TFX paste is great; it’s thick, so you'll need to warm it up a bit before applying. Make sure you have the right thermal pads as well! You don't want to mess up the thickness. Good luck with your repairs!

Repasting the GPU can make a big difference! It sounds like your temps are really high, especially with the core hitting 94°C. I suggest using Arctic MX-6 thermal paste and some good thermal pads. Make sure to check the manufacturer's site for the right thickness of the pads. It’s a straightforward job if you follow a good tutorial. Good luck with the process! Have you had any issues with the fan interface that could cause the fans to not run at full speed?

Thanks! I’ve already ordered the Arctic MX-6 and thermal pads. Just worried if the fan interface might also be an issue. Could I be risking overheating again if that’s faulty?

Definitely time for a GPU spa day! After years of use, they deserve some maintenance. Getting it cleaned and repasted can work wonders. Don’t hesitate to get it checked by a professional if you're uncertain about handling it yourself.
